Topics
What you learn, volume by volume. Each item is a chapter or a part with its own program; the measurements are the ones the program prints.
Signals (volume 1)
- Sampling and measuring: aliasing seen and heard, quantization noise and dither, decibels (dBFS, dBm), noise figure and the Friis formula.
- Complex numbers and I/Q: the phasor, negative frequency, down and up conversion, phasing SSB, I/Q imbalance.
- Frequency analysis: the DFT written by hand, the in-place radix-2 FFT and the one with
Vector<T>, windows (Hann, Hamming, Blackman-Harris, flat-top), the spectrum, the spectrogram and the waterfall in real time. - Finding signals: correlation and convolution, a Barker code below the noise, Goertzel and the sliding DFT, the DTMF detector, Morse code read down to −6 dB.
- Filters: FIR by windowing and optimal by Remez; Butterworth, Chebyshev, Bessel and elliptic IIR; high-pass, band-pass, notch and comb; all-pass and the 90° network; stability, fixed point and limit cycles.
- Changing the rate: polyphase decimation and interpolation, half-band filters, CIC, rational and arbitrary-ratio resampling, the adaptive resampler between two sound cards.
- Hilbert and complex filters: the analytic signal, envelope and instantaneous frequency, SSB at −137 dB, the filter that separates USB from LSB.
- Noise and voice: noise reduction in time and frequency, adaptive filters, G.711, ADPCM, LPC and CELP.
Radio (volume 2)
- Analog modulations: AM, FM and SSB, with their demodulators.
- Digital transmission: FSK, PSK, QAM, OFDM; symbol and carrier synchronization.
- Codes: CRC, Hamming, convolutional and Viterbi, Reed-Solomon, interleaving.
- Amateur modes: AX.25 packet and APRS with the sliding-DFT demodulator, RTTY, PSK31, FT8.
- Software radio: the SDR receiver from the I/Q card to audio, DVB-S digital amateur television.
Satellites (volume 3)
- Orbits: orbital elements, SGP4 and SDP4, passes and visibility.
- Ground station: Doppler, rotators, weather image reception.
Microwaves (volumes 4 and 5)
- Design: microstrip lines, the Smith chart, matching networks, filters, couplers, amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, patch antennas.
- Simulation: circuit and electromagnetic, written by hand, checked against formulas and measurements.
